How to play Yut

What is Yut Nori

Yut Nori is a Korean board game. You throw four sticks and move pieces by the result.

Families play it at the Lunar New Year. First side to bring four pieces home wins.

Do is one step, Gae two, Geol three, Yut four, Mo five.

Yut and Mo give another throw, so a game can flip fast.

This app adds augments. The rules stay the same. Your options shift a little each turn.

Basic rules

The board has 29 points: 20 on the outer ring and 9 on the diagonals.

Each side has four pieces. They enter at the start, circle the board and go home.

Throw again after a Yut, a Mo or a capture.

Land on an enemy piece to capture it. It restarts from waiting.

Your pieces on one point stack and move together. A captured stack goes back whole.

A piece resting on a corner turns onto the shortcut on its next move. Passing a corner keeps the outer ring.

Resting on the center turns toward the finish. Passing it goes straight.

Back-do moves one step back. Waiting pieces cannot use it.

This app's game

Augments are our own invention. There are opening, middle and finale slots.

On your 1st, 6th and 12th turn you see three choices. Pick one.

Choices come from the game seed. Every pick is free.

A first capture cushion: your first captured piece returns to point 1, not to waiting.

A truce: after a side loses two pieces, its opponent cannot capture on the next turn.

Throws come from the seed and the throw number. The same game gives the same throws.

Basic tips

Aim for corners. The shortcut saves three or four steps.

A lone piece gets captured. Pieces ahead are hunted from behind.

Stack for speed. One capture sends the whole stack back.

Read the choices. No augment is the best in every game.

Small throws matter. A Do can land you exactly on a corner.

Deeper tips

Do not hoard one-use augments. Games are short.

When behind, hunt. One capture can reset the race.

When ahead, stack instead of walking alone in front of an enemy.

Try both AI styles. Greedy hunts. Safe avoids.

Iron Stack needs three pieces stacked. Stacking takes planning.

If you are stuck

Nothing is clickable. Pick a throw first. Then your movable pieces light up.

A throw is left but unusable. If the landing point is blocked, the throw is dropped.

You threw Back-do with no piece on the board. The turn passes.

You cannot capture. A truce may be active this turn.

No undo. Cancel works before you move. A moved piece stays.
